Addressing Behavioral Problems that Affect Children’s
Social- Emotional Well-Being

Researchers and practitioners in the fields of Early Childhood Education, School Age Education, Special Education, and Mental Health have concluded that increasing numbers of young children have more complex behavioral problems that are making it difficult for them to achieve success in school and life.

Such problems include serious disorders such as Autism and ADHD, but also non-specific problems with a variety of troubling symptoms: hitting, kicking, biting, grabbing, bullying, defying authority, controlling peers, sexually acting out, withdrawal, clinging, inattention, separation, attachment difficulties, and more.

SELF’s Approach to the Problem
The SELF program is designed to help improve all children’s
opportunities for success:

  • Consult with child care home and center providers on how to encourage social and emotional well-being for children aged birth to 5 years. A recent study on pre-kindergarten programs indicated the use of consultation programs assisting teachers manage children’s behavioral problems are the only methods found to reduce the high rate of deenrollment.
  • Consult with child care providers on the challenging behaviors of specific children and develop an action plan for the program to reduce the problem behavior(s).
  • Help child care providers include parents in the action plan to reduce problem behavior(s).
  • Refer the child and/or family for additional services if needed.
  • Provide formal training sessions to child care providers on the development and maintenance of children’s social-emotional well being and on the management of challenging behaviors that interfere with a child’s development.
  • Identify resources for providers on social—emotional development such as professional books, articles, children’s books, web sites, and other practical information.
  • Enhance the community’s awareness of the importance of healthy social-emotional development.
